13 German Mennonite families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in present-day  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship Concord to begin one of America’s oldest settlements – Germantown.

Babe Ruth hit three homeruns in one World Series game, a record shared with only one other Major League ball-player, Reggie Jackson, also in a Yankee uniform.  The game was played at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, Missouri.

In Game 4 of the World Series played at Wrigley Field, Billy Goat Tavern owner “Billy Goat” Sianis bought a seat for his goat and was escorted out of the stadium and cast a goat curse on the Chicago Cubs.

A caravan of Native Americans departed from the cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle and ended in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to meet with United States Government leaders in an attempt to raise national awareness of issues related to Indian-federal relations. This trek was called the Trail of Broken Treaties.

War erupted in the Middle East as Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Yom Kippur holiday. (Israel, initially caught off-guard, suffered heavy losses before a cease-fire finally took hold in the nearly three-week conflict.)

Pope John Paul II, on a week-long U.S. tour, became the first Pontiff to visit the White House, where he was received by President Jimmy Carter.

Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten, robbed and left tied to a fence. He died five days later.

Pat Surtain for the Denver Broncos returned an interception for 100 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.  The Denver Broncos beat the Las Vegas Raiders, 34-18.
