Congress chartered the “nation’s attic,” the Smithsonian Institution. It was named in honor of English scientist Joseph Smithsonian, whose bequest of $500,000 made it possible. Smithsonian’s will directed that the money be used “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.”
