Robert Fulton’s North River Steam Boat (Popularly known as the Clermont) began chugging its way up New York’s Hudson River toward Albany. The 150-mile trip took 32 hours, the return trip another 30 hours. “Fulton’s Folly,” as it had been called, proved a success.
