The Opelousas Massacre occurred in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Beginning with the execution of 27 black prisoners, whites conducted widespread attacks of African Americans in the vicinity killing at least 200 blacks. The attackers’ goal was to reverse dramatic political gains made by Black citizens after the Civil War.
