Elizabeth Jennings Graham, a black school teacher, tried to board a segregated horse drawn streetcar, the conductor objected and expelled her from the rail car.  Elizabeth Jennings successfully challenged the racist streetcar policies in New York City and all of the city’s street and rail cars were desegregated.  Elizabeth Jennings lawyer was Chester A. Arthur, who later became president of the United States.
