One of America’s worst urban fires and forest fires broke out in Chicago, Illinois and Peshtigo, Wisconsin. The Chicago fire claimed more than 200 lives and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings. The Wisconsin blaze claimed an estimated 1,500 lives and scorched 1.5 million acres of timberland.
