General George Armstrong Custer led an early morning attack on the Cheyenne living with Chief Black Kettle, destroying the village and killing more than 100 people, including many women and children and Black Kettle himself. This took place near the Washita River (now know as Washita Battlefield National Historic Site) near Cheyenne, Oklahoma. This incident is called the Battle of the Washita River, also called the Battle of the Washita or the Washita Massacre.
