Black seamstress Rosa Parks defied the law by refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus to a white man. Parks was arrested, sparking a yearlong boycott of the buses by blacks. The law requiring blacks to sit in the back of the buses was eventually struck down by the Supreme Court.
