Rioting and looting broke out in the predominantly black Watts section of Los Angeles over the arrest of a black man suspected of drunken driving. 35 deaths occurred, mostly of blacks, over 1,000 people were injured, 4,000 arrests and enormous losses due to arson and looting occurred, while the exultant cry of “Burn, baby, burn” rose in the streets. It took 15,000 guardsmen and cops almost a week to end the riot.
