U.S. representative Leo J. Ryan of California and four other people were killed in an ambush in Jonestown, Guyana, by members of the Peoples Temple. Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Members who refused to swallow the drink were shot.
