President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed the appointment of up to six additional justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, resulting in accusations that he was attempting to “pack” the Court with justices who would vote in favor of his New Deal legislation. (The Senate defeated the proposal the following July.)
