1971 Due to harsh conditions and poor treatment, the Attica prison (in New York) revolt began.  The inmates took the prison guards hostage and demanded better living conditions.  After four days, the state police officers stormed the prison, killing 29 inmates and 10 of the captive correctional staff members.
